Algarve Monuments Need €14 Million Worth of Repairs

Posted on August 27, 2012

The Algarve regional culture authority has identified 59 monuments in need of repair. The price tag on these repairs will total €14 million.

According to a recent article in The Portugal News Online, the monuments that need the most work are the Fort of S. Luís de Almádena (Vila do Bispo), the Cruz de Portugal (Silves), the Convent of Our Lady of Assunção (Faro), the chapel of Our Lady of Conception (Alcoutim), Faro Fortress, Santo António church (Lagos), Santa Catarina Fortress (Portimão), Silves castle walls, Santa Justa Castle (Alcoutim) and the old bridge in Silves.

The study claims that work is needed in the S. Luís de Almádena in Vila do Bispo, because “visitors are at risk because of its proximity to the cliffs and the lack of warning signs.” Other repairs are needed for structural stability. The repairs will be funded by the EU.
