My post last week, “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Looting” generated a bit of controversy because people on the collectors’ side of the cultural property debates felt that Hugh Jarvis’ looting bibliography was one-sided, citing only to pieces that support the archaeologists’ perspective.
In response, Wayne Sayles has put together a Supplemental Bibliography and posted it to the Ancient Coin Collector’s Guild website. About this bibliography, he explains:
There are many bibliographies online that highlight the archaeological perspective in the cultural property debate. The bibliography that follows is supplemental to those as it focuses on resources with a more balanced perspective.
The ACCG bibliography is not a direct supplement to the Jarvis bibliography because it pertains to the cultural property debates generally as opposed to looting in particular, but I think it was a great idea for collectors, who felt their academic publications were underrepresented, to put together a list to round out the available resources for scholars. I have suggested that the collectors approach Jarvis and discuss how the list might be rounded out, but it does not appear anyone has done so yet.
The supplemental bibliography contains no hyperlinks, but it is new so perhaps that will be fixed in the future.

I do intended to update the URLs to hyperlinks, but didn’t have time to do that immediately and the site software does not do it automatically. I think it would be great if Dr. Jarvis found some of these references worth adding to his own bibliography, recognizing of course that not all are directly related to looting. I will leave the bibliography posted on the ACCG site and update it as time allows and further references come to my attention (I’m sure there are many). In any case, thanks for the reminder that light is better than heat. BTW, the impressionable minds that I was referring to were in Buffalo, not in Italy.

Hi, I contacted Dr Jarvis last week, and gave him the links to the blogs where his bibliography was being discussed and Sayles’ offer to supply additional material. I expect therefore he will be looking in on Mr Sayles’ efforts in due course.
