A Chip Off the Old… Toilet? Art Crime as an Art Form

Posted on May 19, 2010

The Washington Post has printed an absolutely fascinating article on an Italian couple who stole little pieces of famous works of art and made new art out of them.  The pieces were all stole between 1995 and 1997, so they are exhibiting the new art now because they say the Statute of Limitations has run.

True, the SOL may have run on the thefts themselves, but what about possession of stolen property?  Also, the SOL on civil suits for damages would have been stayed by the discovery rule in those jurisdictions that have one.

The article poses some excellent questions about art crime as an art form.
