EU Weighs in on West Bank Heritage Designation?

Posted on March 1, 2010

Last week the CPAL Blog reported on the riots following Israel’s designation of West Bank heritage sitesArab News attributes the following quote to Catherine Ashton, the EU’s foreign policy director —

[The EU] regards the recent decision by the government of Israel to add sites in Hebron and Bethlehem to the list of Israeli national heritage sites as detrimental to attempts to relaunch peace negotiations…  [The EU] calls on Israel to refrain from provocative acts … [and] recognizes the importance of these religious sites to all three Abrahamic faiths and supports the principle of access for all[.]

The Arab News article does not link to the statement or another source, and I have as of yet been unable to find corroboration, but will report back.

UNESCO has already voiced concern over the designation, and the Palestinian PM prayed at the Tomb of the Patriarch on Friday.
