Azerbaijan has increased their protection of cultural property by way of increased penalties for illegal exporting of protected cultural materials. Azernews explains:

According to the changes, illegal export of Azerbaijani cultural heritage samples included in the list of cultural values will be punishable by a fine worth 1,500 manats for individuals, 3,000 manats for officials and 10,000 manats for legal entities.

The current legislation envisions a fine of 15-40 manats with a warning.

If you are wondering what that translates to, Azerbaijan is going from the US equivalent of a $20-50 fine for individuals to nearly $2,000. Given that the Azerbaijan per capita gross domestic product is about 20% of the US’, this would be the rough equivalent of a $10,000 fine in the US for a first-time offending individual.
